Contractor Marketing for the Houston Area
Houston added more people than any other US metro in 2025 (US Census Bureau), and it permitted more new single-family homes than any metro in the country (Census building permits). That's a lot of work for contractors, spread across a lot of map.
We're based in Austin, and several of our clients work on Houston's north side, in Montgomery County and up toward Huntsville. Here's how we approach marketing a trade business across greater Houston.
Ten Counties, and None of Them Are the Same Market
The Greater Houston Partnership counts ten counties and 8,838 square miles of land in metro Houston, an area larger than New Jersey (Greater Houston Partnership). The City of Houston is only about 2.4 million of the metro's 7.9 million people.
Most of the growth is outside the city limits. Montgomery County added about 30,000 residents in a single year, the fourth-largest numeric gain of any county in the country (US Census Bureau), and Conroe grew from about 90,000 people in 2020 to nearly 120,000 in 2025 (Census estimates). Out west, Fulshear was the second-fastest-growing city of its size in the US (US Census Bureau).
For marketing, that means a contractor in Conroe and one in Katy are competing in different markets, even though both are "Houston." Your website and ads should be built around the part of the metro you actually serve, not one generic Houston page.
What Houston Weather Does to Your Phone
Few markets swing as hard on weather. Hurricane Harvey flooded nearly 136,000 structures in Harris County alone (National Weather Service). When Hurricane Beryl came ashore in July 2024, 2.26 million CenterPoint customers lost power at some point (Community Impact).
- Generators: that July, in-home consultations for Generac standby generators in Texas ran five times the previous six-month average, and Generac's CEO said Houston reaches its tipping point faster than anywhere in the country (Marketplace). See generator installation marketing.
- Plumbing: after the February 2021 freeze, the city estimated 50,000 homes and 400 apartment complexes had busted water pipes (mayor's testimony via Patch). See plumbing marketing.
- HVAC: summer 2023 was Houston's hottest on record, with an all-time high of 109°F (National Weather Service). See HVAC marketing.
- Trees and restoration: state regulators found fallen trees caused many of Beryl's outages (Texas Tribune), and Harvey showed how much water damage one storm can leave behind. See tree service and restoration.
Demand like that can't be handled by a campaign someone adjusts once a month. We build weather aggregation tools that adjust PPC campaigns automatically, so spend can climb when a storm is coming instead of after it has passed.
Houston Rules That Show Up in Your Sales Calls
Houston is famous for having no zoning. In the city's own words, "The City of Houston does not have zoning," though private deed restrictions can still apply (City of Houston). Floodplain rules are strict instead: new construction in high flood-risk areas must sit at least 2 feet above the 500-year flood elevation, and all development in the city needs a development permit (Houston Permitting Center).
Homeowners planning an addition, a rebuild or a custom home run into those rules early. A builder or remodeler whose website explains them plainly earns trust before the first call. See our pages for remodelers and foundation repair.
Licensed trades have their own paperwork. Electrical and HVAC contractors register their state licenses with the City of Houston before they can schedule inspections (Houston Permitting Center). Putting that license front and center on your site is a trust signal, and Texas rules require HVAC and electrical contractors to include their license number in their advertising (16 TAC §75.71).
Our Clients North of Houston
This is the part of Texas where most of our clients are.
- Texas Turf and Rubber Mats (WB Rubber), in Montgomery, sells rubber stall mats and artificial turf across a roughly 300-mile radius. In its first four months with us, its SEO website and ads brought in 3 dealership applications, 5+ government building leads and 20+ gym leads.
- Dura-Land Solutions, a land clearing and excavation company in Huntsville, runs a wide-area Texas SEO strategy with us, built around Walker and Montgomery counties. See excavation marketing.
- A remodeling contractor in Magnolia whose SEO targets The Woodlands, Memorial and Jersey Village.
- A roofing and exteriors company in the Magnolia and Woodlands area. See roofing marketing.
How We'd Market Your Houston Trade Business
- Start with your Google Business Profile. Google ranks map results partly by distance from the searcher (Google), so your own profile is what puts you in the map pack around your shop. We set it up properly and keep it active.
- Build pages for the places you really work. Organic results reach farther than the map pack, so your website gets pages for your services and the parts of the metro you serve, with real projects from each.
- Use ads where speed matters. Google Ads and, for eligible trades, Local Service Ads put you in front of searchers within days, targeted to your counties.
- Report what came in. Calls, form submissions, lead quality and cost per lead on a real-time dashboard, with a monthly summary.
Ads often bring calls in the first week. SEO takes longer: most clients see meaningful ranking improvements within 60 to 90 days. Plans start with a 6-month commitment, then go month to month.
