National vs. Regional SEO: Which One Fits

Regional SEO covers a defined area bigger than one metro: all of Texas, a few neighboring states, or a region like the Gulf Coast. National SEO covers the whole country. Both are for companies that sell well beyond the town where they're based and don't have an office in every market.

That usually means:

  • Statewide and multi-region contractors and suppliers who travel or ship to customers across a large area.
  • B2B and [industrial companies](/industries/industrial) whose buyers search by product or capability, not by city.
  • Catalog and online sellers shipping across the country.
  • Service businesses expanding across Texas or into new states.

Regional is usually the smarter place to start. The competition is narrower, results come sooner, and you can add markets as they prove out. Go national when your buyers are national and you can deliver everywhere they are.

Franchises with many independently run locations are a different problem, with a Business Profile and a location page for every unit. That's our franchise SEO service, not this one.

Why the Map Pack Won't Follow You

Google ranks its map results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. It defines distance as "how far each business is from the customer who's searching" (Google). You can't change where your business is.

Business Profiles have limits too. Google says to create a profile "for your actual, real-world location," that virtual offices aren't eligible, and that a service area "shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time" from where the business is based (Google).

So in markets far from your base, the map pack is mostly out of reach, and regular organic results are where the work happens. That's what national and regional SEO is built around.

How We Run a National or Regional Campaign

  1. Pick markets with data. Your sales history, where you can actually deliver, and search demand decide which markets get attention first.
  2. Build the architecture. A strong page for each service, then market pages only where you genuinely work. Every page links into a clear structure, because Google "uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl" (Google).
  3. Write real local content. Projects you've done there, customers you serve, delivery or travel details, and local rules that affect the job.
  4. Business Profiles only where you're eligible. One for your real location or service area, never fake offices.
  5. Earn links and coverage. Industry sites, trade associations, suppliers and local press in the markets you're entering.
  6. Handle technical SEO at scale. We build in code with Next.js, so large sites stay fast and consistent as pages are added.
  7. Bridge with Google Ads. Ads can target "countries, areas within a country, and a radius around a location" (Google), so a new market can produce leads while organic rankings build. See PPC management and how our ad pricing works.
  8. Report by market. Rankings and leads broken out for each market you target.

What We Won't Do: City-Swap Pages

The fastest way to get a page for every city is to copy one page and swap the city name. It's also the fastest way into Google's spam policies. Google's definition of doorway abuse includes "pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page," and it describes scaled content abuse as "many pages are generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users" (Google).

Google ran four spam updates in 2026 alone (Google Search Status Dashboard). Building a footprint on templated pages means building it on something Google has said, in writing, that it doesn't want.

Our rule is simple: if a market page doesn't have something true and specific to say about that market, we don't build it. Before new location content goes live, we run a similarity check across the pages so near-duplicates get caught and rewritten.

Results From Clients Who Sell Beyond One City

  • Pierce Roofing works across the communities around Green Bay, Wisconsin. We launched its 130+ page site in mid-February 2026. By October 2026 it had gone from 2 keywords in Google's top 3 to 61, and from 151 total ranking keywords to 418 (Semrush).
  • Texas Turf and Rubber Mats (WB Rubber) sells from Montgomery, Texas, across a roughly 300-mile radius and more than 60 cities. With its SEO website and ads, it got 3 dealership applications, 5+ government building leads and 20+ gym leads in its first four months.
  • Dura-Land Solutions, a land clearing and excavation company in Huntsville, Texas, runs a wide-area Texas SEO strategy with us, built around Walker and Montgomery counties.
  • A window and door installer in western Colorado uses our Google Ads management to reach customers across its region.

Realistic Timelines

Most website projects launch in one to two weeks, and most clients see meaningful ranking improvements within 60 to 90 days. Broad national terms are more competitive than regional ones and usually take longer, which is one reason we often start regional and expand.

Google Ads can fill the gap: once a campaign is live, calls often start within the first week. Plans start with a 6-month commitment, then go month to month.
